"Trust not the physician." (Timon of Athens)

.....I went to a Chinese Restaurant tonight and had a lobster in black bean sauce. You ought to try it sometime, but I kind of doubt that you will be able to find one that has a whole lobster on the menu for $16.99...that's for a pound and a quarter.  They also have two pound lobsters, but I didn't go for it.  When I finished, I got a fortune cookie that weighed in at 1 1/4 ounces, and my "fortune" read "Change is happening in your life, so go with the flow." Good advice. The change is that instead of my going to the hospital, the medics we called took RH+ for a change instead of me. She was in bad shape all night with cramps in her legs (very painful), and stomach.  She vomited a couple of times. She didn't want me to call 9/11 during the night, but at 9:30 this morning she threw in the towel. Turns out she was dehydrated and an x-ray showed that she probably had a blockage in the small intestine, and the doctor ordered a cat scan for tomorrow morning.  Yes this is quite a change. I hate when RH+ is RH-! I'd rather be ill rather than she.  Who's going to fill the pill boxes?  Who's going to make the beds? Who's going to take out the garbage? Who's going to cook dinner? Who's going to do the laundry? Who's going to take in the newspaper in the morning?  I don't have a clue as to who is going to do all these things.

.....Lately I've been subject to political Republican commercials that play over and over and over again vilifying President Obama.  President Obama has commercials where he goes over some of the things he has accomplished while in office....in spite of constant Republican opposition. I wonder why the Republican commercials do not deal with the issues in the country and tell what they plan to accomplish if Mr. Romney should win the election instead of beating up on the President.  Now we still have six months before November turns up, and I fear that it's a little too early to be electioneering.  Let's take a breather, guys!  Well, I suppose all my Republican friends and adversaries may have a different point of view, but that doesn't make them bad persons.

Poor Rh - my best wishes for her recovery. A cat scan? Meeow!!!!
Yes, the Republicans have some way to go before they can defeat Pres. Obama, which I suppose might account for the frequency and tone of their adverts. And yes, some Republicans are lovely people, especially Robin and Phil B.: to whom good wishes also. Cuzzin Ruth

  2. I am NOT a Republican. That said, I believe that the G.O.P. will run this country, AT THIS TIME, better than the Obama Gang will.

  3. If you wish to learn what the Republicans wish to do, read their, or for that matter, Romney's platform. They'll do what they've been doing since at least the mid-1920's. Compare Romney's stated positions with Coolidge's, on a basic level, they are virtually identical. This is the philosophy that led to the Depression and the current Great Recession, there is no other possible interpretation. Most Republicans are not evil, merely xenophobic and misguided.

  4. Of course, if it looks like a Republican, if it walks like a Republican, if it talks like a Republican, then maybe it's not a Republican.

Hugh, my friend, I'm surprised and honored that you are reading my blog--and I love your comment. And remember if it looks like a Democrat, walks like a Democrat, and talks like a Democrat--then it's a Democrat.

    1. Doctor-I do check on you now and then. An revealing sidelight, Andrew Mellon, a noted Pittsburgh richo and Coolidge's Treasury Secretary, is generally credited as being the first to formulate the theory and also the phrase: "Trickle Down Economics."

Phil - sorry for my mistake, I understood you to be a Republican! I am a Labour voter, and I don't care who knows it!! Hope you are well, Cuzzin Ruth

  6. Try to be fair even if you are a liberal, which gives you the right to be condescending to those who have not reached your spiritual and intellectual level.

At the end of the Great Lover's term (W. J. Clinton), a recession started. We had some good and some bad economic years with Dubya. Now, after almost four years with The Great Community Organizer, we are still in a recession, for which we can blame Dubya or maybe even Nixon but NOT The Great Community Organizer.

Btw, Hugh, blaming the Keep Cool Man (Calvin) for the recession that took place as a result of the Stock Market Crash is more than a stretch.

With all due respect, as Henry Steele Commager was wont to say, "Let us have no Duffy's Tavern history here." Neither Cal nor anyone else was capable of stopping a runaway party train.

College students want a simple answer for everything, but if you truly seek truth, you will find much more complex whirlpools, particularly on economic matters.

    1. Mr. B.--You are correct, economics is, at best, more of an art than a science. However, references to Duffy's Tavern aside, history still unequivocally shows that both the Depression and the current recession could have been avoided or at least largely mitigated by the imposition of intelligent regulation in a timely manner and that the inability of our governments at the time to recognize that and act were among the prime causative factors. To say nothing could be done ignores the facts.

Of course I'm not saying Silent Cal caused our current situation, just pointing our that Romney is, even after a Depression and a Great Recession, still espousing the same, old tired ideas. He wants to repeal Sarbanes/Oxley and Dodd/Frank. How on Earth is that going to help? If anyone can show me that's not what he says he wants to do, God bless them.

    2. Dear friend and Independent PBI, I don't recall mentioning you in this blog. I simply complain about the commercials that run over and over. And I don't get personal either. You imply that as a "liberal" therefore I'm not "fair". And you also perceive me as being "condescending". I have never, ever gotten personal with you. I believe I've always been fair and uncondescending with everyone. And, finally, I do have Republican friends. You're an Independent.

  7. Perfect, Phil. As usual, you elegantly and succinctly cut to the heart (pun intended because we independents who are often demonized as far right republicans couldn't possibly have the intelligence or compassion to understand). I think what democrats fear is that Romney will be an executive (the president is the head of the executive not idealogy branch) and will tend to the national defense and economy as such. He did it in MA and for the olympics and a lefty lawyer friend of mine who sat across the table from Romney when he ran Bain, said he was tough, smart, and fair.

  8. If a lawyer said it, it must be true.

It's also interesting to hear a self-described "independent" feel "demonized" by others because they categorize him as a "far right republican" -- yet he then categorizes (demonizes?) a lawyer friend as a "lefty." Or might he have been referring to the lawyer's choice of hand to sign legal papers?

  9. ...Maybe BF is referring to "Lefty" Gomez???? Or perhaps Lefty Koufax??? On average there is no significant difference in IQ between righties and lefties, studies show. But there is evidence that lefties are better at divergent thinking, and at developing new concepts which is considered an element of creativity.
...And whatever their political persuasion, lefties are in good company: Six of the past 10 presidents, including both Barack Obama and George H.W. Bush, have been left-handed. So was McCain, Clinton, Perot, Truman, Reagan, Picasso, and Ben Franklin.
...All 12 of the Republican candidates that sought the nomination for President are right handed. Tsk.Tsk.

  10. In fact, I am a registered Democrat so that my primary vote will be meaningful. Hudson County, where we live, is overwhelmingly Democratic and is considered one of the two most corrupt counties in the U.S.A. God save the Queens who are in abundance here also.

  11. Dear Joel and Doc, you disappoint me but exemplify the frustration we independents have with your smugness and misrepresentation. If this offends you, well, Doc, ruthless pursuit rubbed off on me. If you read my statement carefully, without prejudice, perhaps you'll see that my friend, whom I love and respect dearly, was characterized as a "lefty" for the purpose of trying to introduce some perspective that a liberal found Mitt Romney smart, tough and fair. That's hardly 'demonization."

  12. Dear friend Bob Fox, I beg your pardon. I "exemplify" your frustration? I'm in "ruthless pursuit" (of something)?" I'm "prejudiced"? I'm "demonizing"? I'm "smug"? Lighten up, my friend. My comment was simply an attempt at humor by using the term "lefty" to refer to one's hands and not politics. I do include as "lefties" Republican presidents Bush, McCain, and Reagan. I'm left handed also. Nowhere in my blog have I ever gotten personal with you over your political persuasions. Read what I wrote--it's not political and doesn't deserve your perception of me.

  13. BF: I'm "smug"? What about someone who complains about how "we independents" are frustrated (by "lefties"? It's not clear) and misrepresented -- and then that same person smugly assumes that I am not also an independent. Or can only non-lefties be independents? If so, then that's not exactly independent. Did you not categorize your lawyer friend as a "lefty" (for whatever purpose)? How did I misrepresent anything by pointing that out? You don't disappoint me, but the source of your need to invoke pejoratives in this forum eludes me.
